Cristalino Tequila
If you're looking for a smooth, affordable and versatile tequila, you might want to give Cristalino Tequila a try. Cristalino Tequila is a new category of tequila that is made from 100% blue agave and aged in oak barrels, but then filtered to remove the color and enhance the flavor. The result is a clear spirit that has the complexity and smoothness of an aged tequila, but the freshness and brightness of a blanco tequila.
I recently had the chance to taste three different brands of Cristalino Tequila: Don Julio 70, Maestro Dobel Diamante and Volcan de mi Tierra Cristalino. Here are my impressions of each one:
- Don Julio 70: This was the first Cristalino Tequila ever produced, and it's still one of the best. It's aged for 18 months in American and French oak barrels, and then charcoal filtered to remove the color. It has a rich aroma of vanilla, caramel, honey and citrus, and a smooth taste of agave, oak, spice and pepper. It's perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks, or mixing in a margarita or a paloma.
- Maestro Dobel Diamante: This is a blend of reposado, anejo and extra anejo tequilas that are aged in different types of barrels, and then filtered to create a clear liquid. It has a floral and fruity aroma of apple, pear, orange and jasmine, and a silky taste of agave, vanilla, almond and coconut. It's very elegant and refined, and ideal for enjoying in a martini glass or a coupe.
- Volcan de mi Tierra Cristalino: This is a relatively new brand that is inspired by the volcanic terroir of Jalisco, where the agave plants grow. It's aged for up to three years in American and French oak barrels, and then filtered using volcanic stones to preserve the mineral notes. It has a crisp aroma of citrus, mint and pepper, and a balanced taste of agave, oak, caramel and chocolate. It's very versatile and easy to drink, and works well in any cocktail or neat.
All in all, I was very impressed by the quality and diversity of Cristalino Tequila. It's a great way to enjoy the best of both worlds: the smoothness of an aged tequila and the freshness of a blanco tequila. If you're a tequila lover or curious to try something new, I highly recommend you give Cristalino Tequila a shot. Cheers!
